Media Banquet: Porcelain Worlds

Stiftung Leuchtenburg

Seitenroda (DE)

2014

High above the Thuringian Forest stands Leuchtenburg Castle, the centre of famous porcelain. For the "Porcelain Worlds" exhibition, we set a "medial festive table". On a long white table in the central room of the exhibition, place settings of plates, cutlery, glasses and tureens appear as if by magic. Around them, delicious-looking pies, sweet petit fours and many other opulent delicacies materialise as if from nowhere through projection – a virtual "Wishing-Table". Visitors experience the baroque banquet first hand. With each course served, the scenery becomes more surreal and wild.

About

Worms wriggle out of pies, turtles crawl out from under salad and a hare is conjured up. Baroque background music, opulent table decorations, lavishly colourful flower arrangements, smacks and burps from hinted-at diners, whose presence can only be glimpsed through baroque-clad arms, heighten the atmosphere, elevating it to the grotesque.

This artistic installation deliberately refuses to be realistic and translates a lavish baroque banquet into a humorous, whimsical dining situation. With detailed, realistic projections of historical porcelain, visitors are shown in an entertaining way how the invention of porcelain shaped the culture of eating
