Ting: Technology and Democracy on Discussion

Norsk Teknisk Museum

Oslo (NO)

2014

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Norsk Teknisk Museum in Oslo, and on behalf of Ralph Applebaum Associates (RAA), we created the interactive experience TING as part of a special exhibition. The TING was a historical site where people gathered for popular and court meetings to discuss issues concerning society. We revived this place at the Oslo Museum of Technology as a media exhibition theatre. The aim was to sensitise visitors to the complex relationships between technology and democracy. With numerous films, animations and projections, we succeeded in creating a social space in which dramaturgical exhibition design works hand in hand with immersive and interactive media.

About

The centre of TING is an interactive table surrounded by a semicircular shelf with 100 exhibits from the museum’s collection, which also functions as a 180° projection screen onto which numerous films and animations are projected. Various controversial questions are raised in short films, and visitors can discuss and vote on these questions. The opinion picture becomes spatially visible in live graphics. By synthesising state-of-the-art exhibition technology, large-format film projection and interactive media, we have created a groundbreaking new exhibition format: the first multimedia TING.
