3 Graces

TIM Industriemuseum

Augsburg (DE)

2010

The treasure that the State Textile and Industrial Museum in Augsburg presents to its visitors over 550 pattern books with 1.3 million fabric samples. The exhibition, designed by Atelier Brückner, tells the story of Swabian textile production from 1780 to the late 20th century. We have brought to life the treasure that had previously lain dormant in the archives and made it interactive for museum visitors. Larger-than-life female torsos, the three Graces, demonstrate the rich palette of fabrics from the house archive and present the colourful world of patterns in the collection.

About

The first figure wears a patchwork dress made of numerous fabric flaps. The focus is on the feel and sensual experience of the fabrics. With the help of an interactive touchscreen, visitors can determine the patterns on the second figure themselves by helping themselves from the rich archive and wrapping them in historical garments. The dress of the third grace serves as a projection screen for the demonstration of various printing techniques. In this way, the previously hidden treasures are presented to a broad public for the first time. With the artistically arranged film sequences, corresponding sound effects and the use of interactive interfaces, the visitor themself becomes part of the installation and the creative designer of new fashion in old garments.
