Facade Mapping: Atturaif Living Museum

Arriyadh Development Authority

Riyadh (SA)

2019

On commission from Boris Micka Associates, we developed the media staging of the Atturaif Living Museum in Saudi Arabia. Atturaif, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, was the original seat of the Saudi royal family and the country's first capital in the 15th century, on the outskirts of today's capital Riyadh. A complex of several museums is designed to convey to visitors the cultural significance of Atturaif and Riyadh and also to strengthen the local identification of citizens. In the Atturaif Living Museum, the ruins of the historical site tell their own story.

About

For this, we developed a seven-minute film and projected it in 3D to fit precisely onto the angular façades of the Salwa Palace. With impressive images and multi-layered sound, the film is a fascinating journey from the past to the present. After dark, the palace is transformed through projections into a cinema of contemporary history. We have researched all the costumes, tools and objects shown in the film in close cooperation with historians and recreated the originals down to the smallest detail. By staging the historical events in a digital space theatre on archaeological ground, we have created an event that is so far unique in Saudi Arabia.
