Living Frontiers

Interkantonale Trägerschaft der 8 Grenzkantone

Biel (CH)

2002

It takes courage to overcome borders, master crises and break taboos. For the VIV[R]E LES FRONTIÈRES - LIVING FRONTIERS pavilion at the 2002 Swiss Expo, we thematized and staged such moments of transgression on behalf of lead agency Atelier Brückner.

About

Inside the pavilion, visitors experienced seven audio-visual moments of transgression. Life-size images of people who turned out to be protagonists of borderline situations were visible on 28 screens. In booths located behind the screens, visitors were invited to witness dramatic situations of socially explosive topics such as gender reassignment, violence in marriage or beauty mania, which were staged in condensed audio plays.

Later in the exhibition, these same protagonists, who had previously acted in isolation, crossed the boundary of their frame of action and began to interact, forming groups, societies – a world. In this way the boundaries of individual and collective experiences, culture and prejudices were made tangible and experienceable. The 28 projection surfaces formed a single, large 360° screen and expanded the space into an immersive cinema in the middle of which the audience became participants in these border crossings.
