Wall of Africa

Expo Zaragoza, Africa Pavilion

Zaragoza (ES)

2008

Africa, origin of human life, fascinating continent with a culture that is thousands of years old. For the African pavilion at EXPO 2008, we were commissioned by ATELIER BRÜCKNER to bring the richness and diversity of the myths, legends, fables and culture of African history to life on the "Wall of Africa". During the day, the media façade displayed a collage of the landscapes of the 14 African countries presented in the pavilion in the form of a dynamic membrane. The image was printed on tiny reflective silver tiles that were mounted as microgrids on the pavilion's outer wall. This constantly moving surface played with the wind, reflecting the sky, clouds and surrounding lights, becoming a living landmark of the Expo.

About

At sunset, the façade transformed almost imperceptibly. As darkness fell, the light from the 60,000 white LEDs underneath gradually became visible, allowing a view of the film that was playing out on the outer skin of the building. Suddenly, the light began to move around the building, streaking across the façade, pulsating in a basic rhythm and flowing around the building. Over a length of 218 metres and a height of six metres, undulating fields, shimmering desert and water landscapes cinematically passed by the audience. Images of the savannah, the steppe and the prairie as a habitat for animals and humans unfolded before the visitors' eyes in a visual poem about Africa and its history.
