Magic Box Magic Grid

State Grid Pavilion China

Shanghai (CN)

2010

"Better City, Better Life." This was the theme of Expo 2010 in Shanghai. With the architecture of its pavilion, the Chinese energy company State Grid wanted to express the company's forward-looking philosophy with strong images. We staged the main show on behalf of ATELIER BRÜCKNER: the Magic Box.

About

In the middle of this huge walk-in cube, we placed people on a glass platform, in a state of suspension. High-resolution LED screens on the walls, ceiling and floor created an immersive multi-media experience, and through a series of connected images we took visitors on a journey through the entire cosmos of energy, illustrating the many ways in which electricity improves our quality of life.
In addition to the main show, the grid was displayed as an eye-catching symbol of the company's core competence on the pavilion’s exterior. During the day, the wind swept across the LED façade, which was covered with small, movable plates that reflected the surroundings like a mirror. After dark, it transformed into a glowing, pulsating screen, demonstrating in a tangible way energy in all its states and forms of movement. Like centrally triggered "heartbeats" images spread as waves over the entire outer skin of the building, with the seemingly self-supporting Magic Box as the central element of the architecture.
