The Treasure, Saudi Arabian Pavilion

Saudi Commission Expo 2010

Shanghai (CN)

2010

About

At EXPO 2010 in Shanghai, Saudi Arabia presented itself with arguably the most impressive architectural pavilion: a ship’s hull resting on columns with its surface forming an oasis surrounded by palm trees.

On behalf of ACCIONA PRODUCCIONES Y DISEÑO S.A. and in cooperation with m box bewegtbild GmbH, we conceived and realised the main show, "The Treasure". Inside the ship's belly, a conveyor belt transported visitors on a bridge which followed the curve of the room, gliding over a concave projection surface which covered the entire floor. Above, the ceiling shone with an oriental mirror mosaic.

Compositions of floral forms and oriental patterns flowed across the floor and walls in a never-ending sea of shapes and colours. Reflections from the many mirrors made the room appear endless, immersing visitors in a series of constantly changing images and emotions. In this visual fairy tale inspired by One Thousand and One Nights, all the beauty and pride of Saudi Arabia was displayed alongside the country’s strength and ongoing efforts to strive for innovation. The stunning imagery, some of which was based on IMAX material, was seamlessly cast across the entire space by 25 HD projectors. The sound for the production was recorded by a 70-piece orchestra, which added greatly to this poetic homage to Saudi Arabia and its people.
